  4.     When San Francisco taxi driver Holden Charles Hollom saw a
  5. mugger knock down a Japanese tourist and grab her purse, he
  6. drove off in hot pursuit and pinned the suspect against the wall
  7. with his cab, breaking the man's leg.

  9.     The mugger, Ocie McClure, was found guilty of robbery and
  10. sentenced to 10 years in prison. But then he filed a damage suit
  11. against Hollom. Earlier this month a jury found that Hollom used
  12. excessive force in making a citizen's arrest and ordered him to
  13. pay McClure $24,595.

  15.     The verdict provoked a swift outcry from crime-exhausted
  16. San Franciscans. Although Hollom's employer, the Luxor Cab Co.,
  17. promised to cover all his expenses, a local radio station
  18. launched a fund-raising drive on his behalf. Within a week more
  19. than $25,000 had been collected; the surplus money will be
  20. donated to a victims' relief fund. Says Hollom: "I would do
  21. exactly the same thing again."
